最近、野村克也さんが亡くなった事でよく特集が組まれています。見ていると、私が野球部時代に学んだ教訓が蘇って来ます。
野球のピッチャーの必要とされる特質と絡めて、ビジネスの世界でも、同じことが言えると思います。
私は高校生の頃、野球部に所属し、社高校のエースピッチャーを任されていました。「エースピッチャー」とわざわざ、自慢したくて言ったのではなく、高校野球はプロ野球と違って力量のあるピッチャーがいれば結構勝ち進むことができます。要するにエースピッチャーですね。
エースピッチャーの特質として挙げられるのが、大胆さと謙虚さだと言われています。すなわち調子が良い時は大胆にあまりコースを気にせずどんどん投げていく。どちらかと言えば高めのボールで、球威で勝負していく。しかし、自分の調子が悪いと判断した時には、低め低めに慎重にボールを集めて討ち取っていきます。
すなわち野手との連携プレイに切り替えます。そういうふうに大胆ではあるけれども謙虚さを持ち合わせた性格でないと、チームを勝利に導く立役者としては、不十分となります。
スティーブンRコヴィー氏も著書「7つの習慣」の中で言っています。
先ずは、主体的に生きる(仕事する)
次は、周囲と協力し合う。
ピッチャーの例に戻すと、「自分はエースピッチャーなのだ」と自負するぐらいの気概を持って、大胆且つ繊細に全て一部始終が自分の力にかかっているつもりで事に臨む。
「監督ももちろんいらっしゃるが、俺の肩にかかっている」
会社なら、「社長は居るが俺が会社を大きくしているんだ」くらいが丁度良いです。

When I was in high school, I was the ace pitcher in a baseball club. I’m not boasting. “Ace” doesn’t mean “No.1 Pitcher”, because unlike professional teams, high school baseball teams can win steadily if they have a competent pitcher. In short, it is an ace pitcher.
You need to be bold and modest to be an ace pitcher, which means that you boldly throw the ball without worrying too much about the course when you are in good condition. Then, the balls will go faster and higher to put out the batter.
On the other hand, you need to control balls carefully by throwing lower when you are in bad condition. In other words, you have to play more cooperatively with fielders. Without such a bold but humble personality, you won’t be good enough to be the ace pitcher leading the team to victory.
Steven R. Covey also says in his book “7 Habits of Highly Effective People”.
First, live(work) independently. Second, cooperate with others.
If you are a pitcher, you should be bold and sensitive thinking winning or losing is depends on you. With the courage and pride, you must say “I am an ace pitcher. Of course we have a director, but victory is on my shoulder.”
Just like that, if you are a business person, you must think “Of course we have a president, but I’m making the company bigger”
